Zinc rarely gets the attention that vitamin D or omega-3 get in daily wellness conversations, yet it sits quietly behind hundreds of processes your body runs every single day. It is also, unusually for a nutrient this fundamental, one whose necessity for human health was not actually proven until the middle of the twentieth century, and the story of how that happened involves a persistent young physician, villages in Iran, and a naval research unit in Cairo.
This is the full picture: what zinc is, how we found out humans could not live without it, what it actually does in the body, and how it shows up differently across a supplement lineup depending on the job it is being asked to do.
What Zinc Actually Is, and Why Your Body Needs a Steady Supply
Zinc is an essential trace mineral, meaning your body cannot make it and cannot store more than a small, short-term reserve of it. Unlike vitamin D, which your skin can synthesize, or iron, which the body recycles and stockpiles in the liver, zinc has to be replenished through diet or supplementation on a near-daily basis.
What makes zinc essential is scale rather than drama. According to the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, zinc is required for the catalytic activity of hundreds of enzymes in the body, and it plays a direct role in protein synthesis, DNA synthesis, cell signaling, and cell division. In practical terms, zinc is involved in almost every process that requires the body to build, repair, or replace something, which is a large part of why deficiency shows up in so many different, seemingly unrelated ways: slower wound healing, a weaker immune response, blunted taste, and, as researchers discovered by accident, stalled growth and delayed puberty in young men.
How We Learned Zinc Was Essential: A Discovery That Took Until the 1960s
Zinc as a metal is ancient. Alloyed with copper to make brass, it has been worked by metalsmiths for thousands of years, long before anyone understood it existed as a distinct element, let alone that the human body needed it. Zinc was not even isolated and recognized as a chemical element in the West until the 18th century. But metallurgy is a different story from nutrition, and the idea that zinc was something the human body actually required to function normally was not established until the early 1960s, and almost by accident.
The discovery is credited to Ananda S. Prasad, a physician who, according to Wayne State University's own archive of his work, joined colleague Dr. James Reimann in Shiraz, Iran, in the late 1950s. There, Prasad encountered a cluster of young men with a puzzling combination of symptoms: severely stunted growth, delayed or absent puberty, an enlarged liver and spleen, anemia, and, unusually, a craving to eat clay and dirt (a behavior known as geophagia). In 1961, Prasad and colleagues published the first clinical description of this pattern, initially framed around iron deficiency anemia, since anemia was the most measurable abnormality in front of them.
The clue that pointed toward zinc came when Prasad relocated to Cairo, working with the U.S. Naval Medical Research Unit No. 3 (NAMRU-3) in Egypt. There, he found young Egyptian men with the same growth failure and delayed sexual development, but without the severe anemia and heavy parasitic infection common in the Iranian cases. If iron deficiency alone could not explain what he was seeing in Egypt, something else had to be responsible, and the dietary pattern shared by both groups, heavy on unleavened bread and low in animal protein, pointed toward poor zinc absorption.
By 1963, Prasad and his co-authors had isolated the answer. In a landmark case, a 21-year-old Iranian man with stunted growth and underdeveloped sexual characteristics saw his condition reverse after zinc supplementation, evidence that could not be explained by iron alone. That finding, and the broader body of work behind it, is what established zinc as an essential nutrient for humans. A follow-up study in 1972 reinforced it further: among a group of Iranian army recruits rejected for service due to poor growth and development, fifteen were found to be zinc deficient, and all of them improved once zinc was added to their diet.
The condition Prasad first described, growth retardation paired with hypogonadism (delayed or impaired sexual development) in adolescent males, is still sometimes referred to in medical literature as Prasad syndrome. More than sixty years on, zinc has a defined recommended daily intake and a well-documented safety margin, but the route to that certainty ran through a specific set of villages in Iran and a research unit in Egypt, not a laboratory in isolation.
What Zinc Does in the Body, Beyond the History Books
Once zinc's essentiality was established, decades of further research filled in exactly why it matters so broadly. A few roles stand out as the best documented.
Immune function. Zinc is involved in the development and function of the cells your immune system relies on to identify and respond to threats, which is part of why zinc deficiency is consistently linked to a weaker immune response and greater susceptibility to infection.
Skin and wound healing. Because skin repair depends so heavily on protein synthesis and rapid cell division, zinc plays a structural role in how efficiently wounds close and skin renews itself. Taste and smell. Zinc is involved in the normal function of taste receptors, and one of the more distinctive signs of deficiency, historically observed in some of Prasad's original patients, is a blunted or altered sense of taste.
Protein synthesis and cell division. This is the mechanism underneath most of zinc's other roles. Every time the body builds new tissue, whether that is skin, immune cells, or reproductive tissue, it relies on the DNA and protein synthesis machinery that zinc helps operate.
Reproductive health. Zinc plays a recognized role in normal fertility and reproduction, particularly in men, which is consistent with the reproductive delays seen in the original deficiency cases Prasad documented.
