Stand in the supplement aisle of a UAE pharmacy or walk past the wellness shelf at Carrefour, and you will likely find two fish oil bottles sitting side by side. Both say "1000mg Omega-3." Both promise a healthier heart and a sharper mind. Pick them up, though, and the fine print tells a different story. One reads "180mg EPA, 120mg DHA." The other reads "90mg EPA, 252mg DHA." Same total. Very different numbers.

Omega-3 is not one ingredient
Most of us talk about "omega-3" the way we talk about "vitamin C," as if it were a single thing you either get enough of or you do not. It is actually a family, and inside that family, three members do the real work: ALA, EPA, and DHA.
ALA comes mostly from plants, things like flaxseed, walnuts, and chia, and your body converts only a small fraction of it into the other two. EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) are the ones found almost entirely in oily fish and fish oil supplements, and they are the forms your body actually puts to work. Think of DHA as a building material. It is one of the main structural fats woven into your cell membranes, and it shows up in unusually high concentrations in a few very specific places: your brain, your retinas, and reproductive tissue. According to the National Institutes of Health's Office of Dietary Supplements, DHA levels are especially high in the retina, the brain, and sperm cells, which tells you a lot about where this fat spends its time and what it is doing there.
That structural role is why DHA gets so much attention around brain health, vision, and early development. It is less of an active ingredient and more of a load-bearing wall. Quiet, constant, foundational.
EPA: the messenger
EPA works differently. Rather than building structure, it behaves more like a signal, heavily involved in how your body manages inflammation. Healthline describes EPA as the omega-3 most associated with easing inflammation and supporting mood, while DHA leans structural, right down to skin and connective tissue. That is a useful shorthand: DHA is a structural component, EPA is more of a functional regulator, and most of the benefits people associate with fish oil, calmer joints, a steadier mood, a cardiovascular boost, trace back at least partly to EPA's role in that inflammatory balancing act.
So neither one is "better." They are simply doing different jobs, in different tissues, on different timelines. A supplement built entirely around one and not the other is only telling half the story.
Why the ratio on the label is not random
Here is where it gets practical. Every fish oil product on the shelf has to choose a lean, EPA-heavy, DHA-heavy, or split evenly, and that choice is not arbitrary. It is usually a signal of what the formula is built for.
